X-ray scanners: the port’s detectives

X-ray scanners: the port’s detectives

Every day, drugs, weapons and other smuggled goods arrive at the port, hidden in containers. Unfortunately, customs currently cannot check 10% of all containers. Physicist Caroline Bossuyt (UAntwerpen) and her colleagues want to change that. How? With x-ray scanners, the port’s future fly-by-night detectives. Find out more in this video!

Caroline Bossuyt, UAntwerpen

A fascination with astronomy led Caroline to study physics, with a focus on astro- and subatomic physics. In addition, her father’s work in aviation and TV programmes such as ‘Border Security: Australia’s Front Line’ broadened her interest. She complemented her studies with medical physics, focusing on X-ray imaging and deep learning. Her research combines this expertise, with a special focus on security.
